Basic Training
Program

Attn: Veterans

This set of exercises is designed to help give you the preparation you need to confidently understand your healthcare options. And remain at ease, your training does not consist of any shaving, shouting or sweating – just some easy reading.

Let's start with
a salute to Veterans.

Exercise 1:
How Humana Honors Veterans

Before we get into the nitty gritty, we’d first like to share some facts about our strong commitment to Veterans.

Humana has a Military friendly culture and has national relationships with organizations. We’re the national Medicare plan provider for AMVETS and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

We’ve contributed over $1 million to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities.1

Through our Veterans’ Hiring Initiative, we’ve hired over 5,500 veterans and their spouses since 2011.2

Exercise 1: COMPLETE

Now that you’re warmed up, drop and give me 60... seconds of reading.

Exercise 2:
What’s covered by Veterans Affairs

If you have coverage through the VA, it’ll be helpful to know what healthcare services the VA already covers when you’re choosing a plan. While each VA benefit package is unique to each Veteran, the following are examples of health care services that the VA typically covers:

Preventive Care Services, like:
  • Health exams (including gender-specific exams)
  • Health education (including nutrition education)
  • Immunization against infectious diseases (like the flu)
  • Counseling on genetic diseases
https://www.va.gov/health-care/about-va-health-benefits/
Inpatient Hospital Services, like:
  • Surgeries
  • Medical Treatments
  • Kidney Dialysis
  • Acute care (short-term treatment for a severe illness or injury or after surgery)
  • Specialized care (including organ transplants, intensive care for mental and physical conditions, and care for traumatic injuries).
https://www.va.gov/health-care/about-va-health-benefits/
Urgent and Emergency Care Services
  • Urgent or emergency care at some VA health facilities
  • Urgent care for injuries and illnesses that need attention right away, but aren't life threatening, at urgent care locations that are part of the VA health care contracted network. This may include care at a VA-approved:
    • Walk-in retail health clinic for minor illnesses like a sore throat or earache
    • Urgent care facility for more pressing (but not life-threatening) illnesses or injuries that require treatment like splinting, casting, or wound care
To use these services, you’ll need to be enrolled in VA health care and you’ll need to have received care from them within the past 24 months. Be sure to tell the urgent care provider that you’re using the VA urgent care benefit when you arrive.

Emergency care in a non-VA hospital, clinic, or other medical setting—only under certain conditions. For the VA to consider covering non-VA emergency care for a non-service-connected condition you’ll need to meet several requirements which are described in more detail on the VA website.

What about vision?

VA covers routine eye exams and preventive tests. In some cases, you may get coverage for eyeglasses or services for blind or low-vision rehabilitation.

And dental?

In certain cases, you may receive dental care as part of your VA health benefits.

Exercise 2: COMPLETE

Great work! It’s almost like you’ve done something like this before.

Exercise 3:
Why you may want to sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan, too

Already have VA benefits? Here are some reasons you may want to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:

REASON 1: Greater Hospital and Doctor Selection

Having a Medicare Advantage plan means you may be covered if you need to go to a non-VA hospital or doctor – so you may have more options to choose from.

REASON 2: More Prescription Options

If you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan that includes Part D (coverage for prescription drugs), you’ll be able to use it to get medicine from non-VA doctors and fill your prescriptions at your local pharmacy instead of through the VA mail-order service.

Exercise 3: COMPLETE

We’re really moving now!

Exercise 4:
How your VA benefits and Medicare could complement each other

VA CoverageYou can use your VA benefits at VA medical centers or you can get permission ahead of time from the VA to get services at non-VA centers covered by your VA benefits, although you may need to pay a VA copayment for non-service-connected care.

Medicare CoverageIf you go to a non-VA (or VA authorized) care facility, Medicare may pay for other services you need during your stay. Check your Medicare plan, so you know which care locations and services you’re covered for.

Exercise 4: COMPLETE

Almost there...keep it up!

Exercise 5:
What to do if you're enrolled in Tricare or CHAMPVA

For those currently enrolled in TriCare or CHAMPVA, we recommend calling a licensed Humana Sales Agent who can walk you through your options and answer questions you may have.
