How Humana Is Driving Better Health
Humana is a health and well-being company that puts #BetterHealth for our members at the core of everything we do. Instead of a traditional approach that treats people when they are sick, our integrated and value-based care approach to Medicare Advantage is transforming health care for aging Americans, lowering costs and keeping our members healthy.
Improving health and lowering costs
Our approach to health care not only helps keep Humana members healthy — it also helps reduce their costs.

  • For example, in 2017, Humana members saved an estimated $400 to $1,600 in out-of-pocket costs compared with people who had traditional Medicare coverage.3
  • Our value-based care relationships help our members receive more preventive care, like screenings for colorectal cancer and breast cancer.4
  • Humana members in value-based care arrangements had 20 percent lower costs compared to traditional Medicare.[1] This adds up to $3.5 billion in avoided covered medical expenses that would have been incurred had they been enrolled in traditional Medicare.

Meeting the unique health needs of aging Americans

  • We’ve pledged in our Bold Goal to improve the health of the communities we serve by 20 percent by 2020 by combining our integrated, value-based care with addressing the social determinants of health for aging Americans.6
  • The original seven Bold Goal communities have seen a 2.7 percent reduction in members’ Unhealthy Days since 2015.7

Providing in-home care
Older Americans want to stay in their own homes as long as possible, so Humana invested in providing seamless and proactive care at home. Through programs and benefits like Humana At Home and telehealth, we not only help our members stay happy and healthy, we help reduce costs.

  • The average cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home in 2019 was more than $90,000 a year.8 By staying home longer, older Americans can avoid this expense, while also improving their health.
  • After being discharged from a hospital, 15 to 20 percent of patients are readmitted within the first 30 days.9 Services like our 30-day care management program have successfully decreased the number of members likely to be rehospitalized by 32 percent.10
